This is the journey of Justin, a selfish but adventurous boy, who lives in a sprawling manor
and shy, newly arrived immigrant Waleed, the son of a family servant and rival to Justin.
Their adventure begins in the forbidden Crawlies Forest, which the two
boys enter during a skirmish.
There, they are captured by a monstrous werewolf named Hal Owen.
To win their freedom, the boys convince Hal to let them accompany him on his dangerous journey to steal a magic artifact from the beautiful princess who lives in the inner forest, a place awash with riches and beauty but also fraught with dangers. Hal reluctantly agrees when he sees they might be useful.
Dismayed at Hal’s increasing mistreatment of him while showing deference to Waleed, Justin breaks his promise to help, incapacitates Hal during his nightly midnight moment of weakness, and escapes to seek help from the princess. Waleed hesitantly follows Justin.
However, they’re soon captured by the Princess’s guards and brought to her castle.
Awed by her beauty and wealth, the boys tell her about Hal and seek help from her to return to their homes. She is intrigued.
But to their shock, she orders the boys to her dungeons for more information.
En route to the dungeon, the boys meet another captive; a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) boy, White Cloud, who tells them that the princess has been enslaving children including himself for decades, turning selfish ones into beasts. Hal is the gatekeeper who struggles to protect them.
The princess is after seven magic charms that together will allow her to break out of the forest and enslave children worldwide. She currently has five of the seven magic charms, and Hal has one. One is missing. While Hal prevents the princess from expanding out of Crawlies Forest, the primary goal of this journey is to free all the captive children before magic curses become permanent at midnight two days hence.
LOH is the story of how they did it against all odds;
a tale of self-discovery, self-sacrifice, and
the transformative power of friendship and courage.
